In this Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike Review. This image is the Old Schwinn Emblem from the 1930's.

The name Schwinn has been around since 1895. There are not too many companies that can say they have been around that long. A company that can last all those years must be doing something right.

I remember years ago when I was a kid and having a Schwinn BMX bike when they were the big craze back in the day. I was never any good at all the tricks the kids would and still do today. The bunny hop was the extent of my skills and even that was not greatest.  I had many bumps and bruises in BMX days.

Schwinn sure has evolved through years from BMX bikes to mountain bikes and more. They have consistently delivered top-quality behind every bike and their recumbent bikes are no different.

Schwinn Recumbent Bikes

Schwinn has made and perfected multiple recumbent bikes through the years. Currently, the top three models are the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike, Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike, and the Schwinn A20 Recumbent Bike. Between the three the top two are the Schwinn 230 and the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike.

When you put the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike and the Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike side by side, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two. But there are definitely differences between the two and for one is the price with 270 being the most expensive. So, why should you pay more for the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike as compared to the Schwinn 230 model?

The Schwinn 230 is the older model of the two and does not have some of the features that the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike does. However, it is still a cutting edge recumbent bike and if you are looking to spend a little less money, it’s a great choice.

Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike

The Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike has 22 preprogrammed workouts and 20 resistance levels. Even though 22 preprogrammed workouts sound like a good amount, that is still less than what the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike offers. However, the Schwinn 230 still provides plenty of challenging programs that will burn those calories, along with toning and strengthening your muscles.

Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike

The premiere model of recumbent bikes from Schwinn is the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike. It has more workouts, profiles and resistance levels than the 230 and A20 models. .

The 270 comes with a surprising 29 different workouts. I can guarantee that anyone who uses it will find a workout that will fit their needs. Regardless of their age or your fitness level.

It is set up to be able to have 4 different user profiles. This is ideal, especially if your entire family will be using it. Chances are everyone will have different fitness levels and will want different types of workouts. Once you set up the control console and your user profile, after that it’s just a matter pushing a button to begin your custom workout.

I have provided a video below that shows you step by step on how to set up the control console, user profile, and other features. I am surprised that Schwinn does not provide a video. They only have the Assembly and Owners Manual that you can download below. But Rudy in the video does a great job and you will find it to be very helpful as well.

What are the Differences Between the Schwinn 270 and 230?

A lady has a finger on mouth with a questioning look on her face.

Here is a quick rundown of the differences between the Schwinn 270 and 230. The Schwinn 230 uses a vented, contoured seat bottom, while the Schwinn 270 adds an extra layer of comfort with its thick padded contoured seat bottom. This is a big plus! At least it is for me but I do not have a lot of padding on my bum. Some of the seats on these recumbent bikes that are out on the market today are hard as a rock!

I used to own the 230 and the seat is very hard. When you see the word “ergonomic” used to describe anything you can sit on – beware! Some people like it but it just made my butt hurt. I needed to add some cushioning to make it comfortable.

There are also differences with the resistance as well. The Schwinn 270 has 25 levels of resistance where the Schwinn 230 has 20 levels. The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike gives you the option to take your workout up a few notches to a more advanced difficulty level.

Again, the Schwinn 270 leads the way with 29 workout programs as opposed to 22 with the Schwinn 230. Additionally, the Schwinn 270 also includes tests for fitness and recovery.

The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike has a higher number of user profiles that can be created. The difference might only be going from 2 user profiles with the Schwinn 230 to 4 user profiles with the Schwinn 270. Having 2 extra profiles might not seem like that much. But if your family plans on using the bike also it does make a difference.

It’s definitely better to be able to store 4 instead of 2, especially if several members of your family want to use this recumbent bike.

The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike has redesigned the pedal cranks. They are now 3-piece pedal cranks and oversized pedals versus the 1-piece pedals along with the standard pedals of the 230 model.

The Schwinn A20 Recumbent Bike is the most basic, lightweight and cheapest model of the three.

If you have a tight budget and just want something to get you started without all the bells and whistles the A20 model might be the best fit for you. The Schwinn A20 delivers the best bang for your buck as far as low budget recumbent bikes are concerned. It surprisingly offers 7 pre-set workouts and 8 resistance levels. Those features are a rarity for a recumbent bike at that price.

Comfort is one of the main factors if not the top factor when you are looking to purchase a recumbent bike. As I said above, I used to own the Schwinn 230. I bought it not even thinking about the seat but then again it was my first recumbent bike.

Many people specifically purchase a recumbent bike because they suffer from back pain. That is the reason why I got a recumbent bike and still use one to this day. Yes, you want to stay in shape but at the same time, you want to protect your back from any kind of impact and strain. I have sat in the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike and it is definitely made for someone with back problems.

The #1 feature I noticed right away was the nice thick and padded seat. Along with the enhanced lower back support.

You can adjust the seat to set the posture that works for you. This is a great feature to have especially if multiple people are using the same bike. It has a vented back for airflow while you are pedaling. This is another great feature, especially for me, because my back tends to get really hot and sweaty. It comes with a built-in fan that keeps you cool while you are exercising. The fan is only a 3-speed fan but it does give you that little extra relief.

Features and Specifications

The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike is one of the top recumbent bikes. It’s fully loaded with 29 programs accompanied with tests, heart rate controls and customized user profiles. You have an array of 25 resistance levels that will take you from a lighter workout to the heavier one or somewhere in between, all with a simple touch of a button.

DualTrack Technology

The display has 13 statistical parameters that are split into two columns: One column contains the results of your current workout and the other one will have the progress of your workout goal. The results will include the RPM, overall distance, intensity, calories, pulse and much more. It’s a great motivator to see your progression as you work your way to your goal.

The LCD doesn’t use batteries as some recumbent bikes do. But it does plug into the wall so you won’t have to deal with issues like having the display dim and become unreadable because the batteries are dying.

Additional Features

It comes with a water bottle holder which is convenient. I know I always have a bottle of water with me when I am working out. You would not think a simple bottle holder would be that big of a deal but it kind of is for me.

Why? Because when I am in the middle of working out it’s nice not having to stop, disrupt my workout by stepping off the bike when I need a drink. When I workout I get into a groove after a while. Having to come to a complete halt in the middle of it really messes up the workout for me.

If you need to relocate the recumbent bike, there are built-in transport wheels. This makes moving it a breeze. It has a grip heart rate monitor that allows you to check out your pulse in seconds. All you need to do is just hold the grip with your hand.
