The Schwinn A20 Recumbent Bike console has 6 different pre-set workout programs. They include automated duration and resistance level changes.

Here are the programs:

  • Uphill Finish – The resistance level will increase gradually over time.
  • Cross Training – This will vary the resistance levels at different intervals.
  • Mountains – This program works similarly to the pyramids which are the next one down on this list.  It begins with low resistance levels before reaching a limit and then cutting back to the original level.
  • Pyramids – The resistance starts off low and then reaches a pinnacle midway through the workout program, and the resistance cuts back again to the original level. When viewing a visual of this workout program it looks similar to a pyramid, and that’s where the name comes from.
  • Ride in the Park – This program is a more low-intensity workout with varying resistance levels.
  • Rolling Hills – A medium-intensity workout that has many spikes in the resistance levels. 
  • Magnetic Resistance is produced by magnets near the flywheel. As the magnets are drawn closer to the flywheel, the resistance is increased. You will find that the resistance changes are much smoother with magnetic resistance.
  • The console does not have the usual ON or OFF button and it shuts off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity.

We now know the Schwinn A20 Recumbent Bike has pre-set workout programs but there is also a Quick Start option where you can conveniently set your own resistance levels at any point in your workout.

Simply press the Quick Start button and you are off! Start pedaling! You can change the resistance levels while you ride. It has eight different levels of magnetic resistance to choose from. You can use the QuickStart and tailor your workout to fit your needs and choose the intensity that works you. You can do low-intensity cardio, steady-state, or even high-intensity interval training.

Power

The console and resistance functions are powered by 4D batteries, but you can also use an AC adaptor which you will need to purchase separately.

Contact Heart Rate Sensors

You can check your heart rate by holding on to the grips on the handlebars of the seat. Those grips have the Contact Heart Rate sensors, which are in the stainless-steel parts of the grip. To display your heart rate, you need to hold the grip firmly. Both of your hands need to be on the sensors. If for some reason you can’t read the heart rate, make sure the sensor grips are clean and wipe off any sweat from your hands.

The best way to check your heart rate is by pausing your workout or by lowering the intensity. There are times where Intense workouts that happen to require heavy muscle contractions can generate small electrical signals. These electrical signals are everywhere throughout your entire body and can interfere with the heart rate sensors. 

The sensors begin to work after detecting four consecutive pulses. It will show the initial heart rate in beats per minute and will be displayed on the LCD monitor. Then keep both of your hands on the grips for another 15 seconds or more to have the machine confirm your initial heart rate.

Extra Accessory Features

The Schwinn A20 Recumbent Bike has features for storing your accessories to make your workout as fun and convenient as possible. This model includes a water bottle holder at the front.

The Schwinn A20 Recumbent Bike also has a media tray to store a phone and accessories. The sound system comes with two speakers that are connected to the console. The console has an additional audio jack in the middle where you can plug in an MP3 player, headphones, and a phone. You will need to get your own cable but note that it does not serve as a charging station for all of your electronics.  Although, I know it can recharge a phone or tablet.

PROS

  • If you are just starting out when it comes to working out, this low budget could be just what you need. It’s lightweight and the features you need when getting started. 
  • For a recumbent bike that is so affordable, it’s very surprising how high the user weight capacity of 275 lbs and elaborate features such as integrated heart rate sensors and several pre-set workout programs.
  • The LCD display is quite large with very simple controls. It is really easy to use, even for people who aren’t good with technology.
  • The overall design is to minimize discomfort.  It has a sleek with a slanted backrest. Both the seat and backrest are padded. The handlebar also has a very ergonomic grip.
  • It has 12 seat adjustment settings, to help people of a range of heights. Compared to other bikes, it caters to a wider range of heights- from 4’1 to 6’2.
  • The front section of the bike has small transport wheels making it easy to relocate and store.
  • Users have praised the bike for running quietly and smoothly
  • Accessory features like the water bottle holder and a sound system will make working out convenient and fun.

CONS

  • The console is quite simple and does not offer any no Bluetooth connectivity. Other bikes on the market can connect to online apps to transfer your exercise performance results.
  • The backrest isn’t adjustable which may make it more difficult for people with back problems.
  • There is no walk-through design as the seat’s handlebars get in the way, increasing the risk of injury.
  • There are no handlebars at the front to support you if you want to exercise while leaning forward.
  • The batteries and power adaptors need to be bought separately.

Overall, the A20 recumbent bike model from Schwinn is a great bike for those who are new to working out or need an exercise bike that’s not bulky. The A20 brings a lot of value for the money because of the pre-set workout programs which are not common for such an affordable bike.
