Shiatsu Massage Chair – If you are looking for a Shiatsu Massage Chair? You are in the right spot! Below I have provided you with the details on some of the best Shiatsu massage chairs out on the market today. Before I get into those details, I wanted to briefly go over the history of Shiatsu and the history behind the Shiatsu Massage Chair.
The History Behind The Shiatsu Massage Chair
Shiatsu Massage Chair – The late Tokujiro Namikoshi is the Founder of Shiatsu Therapy. He was born on November 3rd, 1905 in Kagawa on the island of Shikoku in Japan. When he was a young boy his family moved to Hokkaido where the weather can get very cold and bitter.
Tokujiro’s mother had developed rheumatoid arthritis resulting from years of hard physical labor. To add to it, there is the change of seasons in Hokkaido where the weather changes from a warm to a cold and damp climate.
They lived in a desolate area and there was no doctor or medicine available at the time. Tokujiro, only 7 years old, tried to help his mother ease her pain.
He found that by pressing on her body with his thumbs, she felt better. Unlike, the usual rubbing or stroking you would see in a typical massage.
Tokujiro focused on putting pressure on specific points that he found along the cervical spine area. In addition, he applied pressure to other points along her middle and lower back. He also learned about the relationship between the Adrenal glands and rheumatism. Eventually, his mother’s rheumatoid arthritis was cured by Tokujiro’s treatment. She ended up living in good health to be 88 years old.
What is Shiatsu?
The word Shiatsu actually does not have meaning in Latin alphabetical characters. Translating the meaning of Shiatsu to English is “SHI” for finger, “OYAYUBI” is the thumb. The “ATSU” means pressure. When you put it all together Shiatsu translated means “finger or thumb pressure”.
Shiatsu is an original hands-on Japanese therapy and was first recognized into Japanese law in 1955 along with the textbook “Theory and Practice of Shiatsu” that was published by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in December 1957.
Shiatsu is characterized as a technique that uses fingers and the palm of a hand for applying pressure to certain surface parts on the body. It is for the sole purpose of correcting the imbalances of the body and maintaining and promoting good health. It is also a method contributing to the healing of certain illnesses.
The following three points are the foundation of Shiatsu therapy:
- Only use the bare hands without the use of any tools or other parts of the body like elbows and knees.
- To put pressure on the surface of the body. But there can be no stroking, pulling or rubbing.
- It provides maintenance and enhances the health or recovery of illnesses.
Those three concepts are the most important when describing Shiatsu as defined by the Japanese people. The essentials of Shiatsu is to practice it using only the fingers, palms and thumbs and the crux of Shiatsu is “Diagnosis and Therapy combined.”
The heart of Shiatsu is called ‘Te-ate’ and the meaning in Japanese is ‘hands-on’. When we feel pain, its human behavior to place a hand on the afflicted location. This reaction is in pursuit to relieve the pain. That behavior is known as ‘Te-ate’. In North America and many other parts of the world, ‘Te-ate’ is generally referred to as ‘Medical Treatment’.
Over 2000 years ago during the mythological age in Japan, there was a ‘Waka’ which is a Japanese poem. The poem talks about Sukunahikona-kami who was the first doctor in Japan. He used to heal people with his bare hands.
If you were to do any research on people healing others with their bare hands? There is a plethora of data on this throughout the world. This practice has evolved into different forms depending on where you live on this planet. It is called ‘Chiropractic’ in the United States, ‘Massage’ in Europe, Anma and Tsuina in China, and Shiatsu in Japan.

Technology is making it possible to be able to replicate various different massage techniques that are performed by professionals like a Shiatsupractor or Massage Therapist.
To be honest, there is no massage chair or product out on the market that can completely replicate a Shiatsupractor. The same applies if you were to compare a massage therapist to a product like a massage chair. That does not mean a massage chair will not give you a great massage? It is simply a different type of massage. However, how many times and whenever you want a massage by having a massage chair is endless!
The following chairs I have listed are some of the best Shiatsu massage chairs. Why? Their signature feature is the Shiatsu massage technique. The other reason is have spent some in these chairs and I know they deliver a top-notch massage, every time!
