The paraspinal muscles are also referred to as the erector spinae muscles. These muscles are located along your spine.  They travel from your occipital bone which is located at the lower part of the back of your head. They run all the way down to the sacrum which is located at the bottom of your spine. 

Your spine is an incredible and arduous creation. Most of us do not think about our spine and all the hard work it does. Then when your back starts hurting you are reminded once again.

Our spines are surprisingly versatile and flexible. It can bend back and forth, as well as side to side. Additionally, it can be twisted.  

Think about that the next time you watch an athlete at a sporting event. What is the spine doing to support the athlete and their movements? Our spines are complicated masterful works of art that are supported by 140 overlapping, intertwined and interconnected muscle groups. To sum it up, it’s one very thick wall of muscle. 

Muscles of Your Back

Those interconnected muscles are relatively small in stature but very strong. They help you bend from side to side. The Interspinal muscles are responsible for taking care of the back and forward bending motions. Next, there are the rotator muscles and their purpose is to help you rotate your trunk area.

Then there is the erector spinae which is made up of two large muscles. The erector spinae lays over the three muscle groups mentioned above and lines both sides of your spine. The erector spinae is your spine’s principal muscles acting as an anchor. They keep you from tipping too far forward and aid in holding your body upright. The erector spinae also works as a shock absorber and takes on the majority of the stress your spine experiences.

The top layer of the muscles for supporting your spine are those responsible for moving other parts of your body.  The latissimus dorsi and trapezius muscles move your arms, but they also work with the erector spinae to support the entire spine and protect it.

Your abdominal muscles are very important when it comes to your spine’s health. They support your lumbar area which is the lower region of your spine. Many of us may not associate the abdominal region with the back. When you strengthen your abdominal muscles and they are strong, it can really help in preventing future back pain.

Importance of Muscle & Mobility

Muscle strengthens and supports the health of your spine. When you keep the muscle groups I mentioned above, healthy, and in good condition. It’s clearly the best thing you can do for the health and protection of your spine against chronic back pain, disease, and injury. Consistent and moderate exercise that targets these muscle groups is essential. 

Regardless, if you have any back issues or not? You need to maintain mobility in your life and never get too stagnant. When you neglect yourself from any physical activity for long periods of time, there are short and long-term negative effects you could end up facing. 

Short-term negative effects: If you suffer from occasional or chronic back pain and remain a couch potato all day. It will most likely make your pain worse. I know it always makes my chronic back pain worse.

Long-term negative effects: Based on an article by John Hopkins Medicine the lack of physical activity has contributed to health conditions like cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, which may increase the risk of certain cancers, obesity and more.

Who is Underwriters Laboratories (UL)?

The UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has over 120 years of experience providing one of the best and most respected third-party certifiers in the US. It also advises manufacturers on creating safer products.
